The Crowns of Croswald - by D.E. Night

RPM's Little Reviews

Happy New Year's Eve!! The kiddos and I wanted to send 2020 out in style with a glowing review of our newfound literary magical obsession: The Crowns of Croswald!

RPM's Little Reviews is the kiddos' section of Misty's Corner Reviews, and it's where I'll share our reviews of all of the lovely children's books we receive directly from publishers and NetGalley! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

So, where did we get the name "RPM's Little Reviews"? It's simple, really, the first initial of each of our children's names! Our son, henceforth known as R, is nine years old, and our daughters P & M, are 8 and 4.

✨ On to our review...

R(9): Five stars! I liked how Ivy never gave up searching for Derwin. I also liked how powerful she ended up being. My favorite parts were her experience in the glanagerie bottle with the pirate and her time with Rebecca in the forgotten room! I can't wait to see what Ivy does next. I loved reading about Croswald! Oh, I also really liked the hairies!

P(8): I liked the ending; it was EPIC! This book made me feel happy. I liked the dragons, especially Humboldt! It was fun watching Ivy go from being just a girl to being a powerful one! I wonder what will happen next?

M(4): This one was a little over her head, but she enjoyed the family time!

My thoughts: The Crowns of Croswald has most certainly exceeded my expectations, wowing me on more than one occasion. I appreciated the likeness to Harry Potter, yet loved how this author was able to craft her unique magical adventure, set in the fantastical world of Croswald!

My kiddos and I were captivated right from the start; we had to take an unplanned hiatus in the middle, but once we could jump back in, we couldn't stop! Luckily I was able to cast this ebook to our tv, and we took turns reading together, flying through the remaining pages.

Ivy Lovely was every bit the heroine I hoped she would be, always meaning well but not unflawed herself. Hidden away as a child to protect her well-being and Croswald, Ivy soon finds herself in the magical school of her dreams. Intent to learn all that she can as a sqwinch, a scrivenist-in-training, she gives it her all - of course, one thing leads to another, and she's off, one unintended venture after another alongside her new friends.

We enjoyed the writing style, the intrigue, and the descriptive scenery. Even though I had to explain certain parts for the little ones to understand, I appreciated the varied word usage and creative ingenuity that came with the many spells and enchanted objects. On that note, I'd LOVE to possess the Olerium Stone! Who wouldn't want to read faster?! So many books, so little time, am I right?

D.E. Night has created an engaging and whimsical tale, charming readers of all ages. Just as I remember experiencing the magical world of Harry Potter with my family growing up, it's exciting to do the same with my children and The Croswald Series! I'd happily recommend this one far and wide; perhaps you'd enjoy reading this series with your family as well!

Many thanks to the author, publisher, and @NetGalley for our complimentary copy of #TheCrownOfCroswald ✨ We have voluntarily and honestly reviewed this title.

This is a page-turning fantasy in the tradition of fairy tales, whimsical worlds, and coming-of-age stories.

The Crowns of Croswald invites young readers to explore themes of stepping into their own magic, discovering their true selves, and battling evil head-on. Hailed by Kirkus Reviews as “an action-packed treat […] with a relatable heroine facing challenges in a vivid world of magic and mystery,” and called a new classic by readers, The Crowns of Croswald series is a magical romp through a fully formed universe with dragons, magical quills, potions, and mythical creatures.

Ivy Lovely is 16 and she has no idea who she is—or what her powers could be. When she crosses a magical boundary, she discovers a whole new world of enchantment and mystery. Making friends that will last a lifetime—and save her life—she steps into her own abilities and discovers more about her hidden past, magical blood, and the power of Croswald’s mystical stones. But all is not well: a dark history and an evil Queen threatens all that is good. Will Ivy’s bravery and wit be enough?

Curious and whimsical, both shy and brave, Ivy is a hero that connects with readers of all ages. For those who wished that Narnia, Harry Potter, and Alice in Wonderland could go on forever, Croswald opens a whole new world of magic. Recommended as a read-aloud for families and a first middle-grade fantasy read, The Crowns of Croswald is a four-part series that will carry readers to a whimsical world that they won’t want to leave.
