The Other Mothers - by M.M. Chouinard

 ✨ Books-On-Tour Review ✨

The Other Mother's is the thoroughly addicting book four in the Detective Jo Fournier Novel series! Once again, I find myself thinking, 'how is this the first time I'm reading a book by XYZ author?' M.M. Chouinard fits this bill perfectly! Book four is my first, but it definitely won't be my last of her novels; I've already 1-clicked books one through three in this series!

I was 100% hooked right from the start; a detective struggling with a challenging personal situation pulled back into work early to lead a case involving the death of a kindergartner on school grounds, which is soon followed by a few more casualties. Who is keeping secrets, or better yet, who isn't in this uppity small-town? The deadliest secret is one that I can almost guarantee you'll never guess...

Jo is a solid female lead, easily likable, and relatable. I enjoyed reading through her inner monologues as she worked the case. I especially found a few of her interactions entertaining, not the subject matter of the case by any means, but more so the decision to either hold her tongue or put someone in their place!

The storyline itself was a non-stop, heart-pounding suspenseful read! Twist after twist, with all key characters always under suspicion. M.M. Chouinard undoubtedly has a way with words, captivating me from page one all the way through page three hundred and thirty-six! I was not expecting this novel to end the way it did! WOW!! I wish I could say more and deep dive into that ending, but I refuse to spoil it! Just do yourself a favor and check this one out!!

Many thanks to NetGalley, the author M.M. Chouinard, and the publishers at Bookouture for my advanced copy of this ebook and my spot on this Books-on-Tour event! I have honestly and voluntarily reviewed this title.

 The Other Mothers
Author: M.M. Chouinard
Publication Day: January 20, 2021
Pages: 336

Book Blurb:
It’s a crisp spring morning when the small-town community around Briar Ridge Elementary School is shattered by devastating news. Bright and shy five-year-old Nicole has disappeared at playtime.

Nicole’s mother, Gia, is lost in her grief. On the same day her baby girl vanished, Gia found out she was pregnant with the sister Nicole had begged for. Gia is also devastated that her best friend Karen was supervising the playground when Nicole was taken. And when Nicole’s body is discovered, Gia can’t help but ask: why didn’t Karen protect her little girl?

Someone knows what happened in school that day and Detective Jo Fournier is determined to find the truth. Jo’s little nieces also attend Briar Ridge and she would cross mountains to keep them safe. As she starts to dig into the mothers’ secrets, she begins to wonder if anyone is telling the truth. Gia’s been hiding a part of herself for years and Jo can tell it’s eating her apart. And Karen is definitely lying—but what is more important than finding the killer of her best friend’s daughter?

As Gia and Karen struggle with their guilt, a teacher at Briar Ridge dies in what looks like a tragic accident. But with two deaths in such a short time, Jo knows better than that. In this school, where soccer moms flock to the gates with cookies for teachers, someone is willing to kill to keep a secret. The only question is who.

A completely addictive thriller that will not let you go until you turn the last heart-thumping page! Perfect for fans of Gregg Olsen, Christopher Greyson and Teresa Driscoll.

About the author, M.M. Chouinard:
M.M. Chouinard's first fiction story was published in her local paper when she was eight, and she fell in love with Agatha Christie novels not long after. While pursuing a Ph.D in psychology and helping to found the first U.S. research university of the new millennium, the stories kept rattling around inside her skull, demanding to come out. For sanity's sake, she released them. She's currently at work on her next novel.
